This annual species of Lathyrus is native to the Western Mediterranean, North Africa & Sardinia. It its native habitat it usually flowers April to June. Here in NZ it is summer flowering too, so anytime from Oct/Nov to Feb.
The flowers are medium - sized and bright magenta in colour, leaves are slightly glaucous grey-green in colour. 1- 3 flowers are produced per flowering stem.
Seed pods are long, smooth & flat looking & carry around 6 - 10 seeds per pod.
An interesting little species to grow in a pot or the garden.
Sow: June to Sept for summer flowers.
How: Chip seed prior to sowing as this aids germination. Sow either in pots or punnets outside, 1cm deep covered with a layer of seed mix or soil. Germination should take around 14 days but species can take longer.
Plant Where: Full sun
Spacing: Transplant to 15cm spacings.
Height: 1.5m
Growing Tips: No need to pinch. Protect from slugs, snail, mice & rabbits!
Seed is best stored in the fridge or freezer
